Frogfruit (Phyla nodiflora var. incisa)
A tough Texas native perennial groundcover that spreads quickly to form a soft green mat dotted with tiny white flowers with purple centers. It works well as a living mulch or lawn alternative and adapts to a wide range of light conditions. Very drought tolerant once established, though it fills in faster and looks fuller with occasional watering.
Typical Uses
• Lawn alternative in low-traffic areas
• Between stepping stones
• Under trees and mixed beds
• Pollinator gardens
Growing Conditions
Light: Full Sun, Part Sun
Water: Low; moderate water improves density
Soil: Highly adaptable. Handles clay, sandy, and average garden soils
Size
Height: Low
Spread: About 18–24 inches per plant, spreading colony over time
Behavior
Evergreen or Deciduous: Dormant in winter, returns in warm weather
Growth rate: Fast spreading
Traffic tolerance: Light
Deer resistance: Moderate
Ecology
Native range: Texas and much of the southern U.S.
