About BOLT Landscape Design
Landscape Design That Works with Central Texas, Not Against It
Central Texas landscapes are challenging by default. Extreme heat, drought, sudden freezes, shallow or compacted soils, and confusing plant advice leave many homeowners frustrated or unsure where to start.
I design landscapes that work with these realities. My focus is on resilient, water-wise gardens that support wildlife, perform well long-term, and make sense for real people living real lives.
About Jennie
In 2019, I left a career in corporate HR to help people create healthier, more resilient outdoor spaces here in Central Texas. I bring a practical, educational mindset to landscape design, helping homeowners understand why certain choices work and how to care for them over time.
My work centers on:
Native and well-adapted plants
Water-wise and climate-responsive design
Long-term plant performance, not just first-year looks
Clear guidance that meets gardeners where they are
I work with new gardeners, experienced DIYers, and homeowners who want a thoughtful plan they can implement at their own pace.
Background & Training
I completed graduate-level coursework in landscape architecture through the University of Texas School of Architecture, completing the majority of the Master of Landscape Architecture curriculum before pausing the program during the COVID period. During this time, I also served as a Graduate Research Assistant with UT’s Center for Sustainable Development, where I researched issues and practices pertaining to ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, and carbon farming.
I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business, which informs my practical, client-centered approach to design, budgeting, and project coordination.
My training also includes coursework in soil science, integrated pest management, and propagation and greenhouse operations through Austin Community College, as well as Gardening for Wildlife studies at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. In 2024, I completed an intensive 12-week Travis County Master Gardeners Horticultural Principles and Practices for Central Texas Program.
I continue to learn through field work, collaboration with local professionals, and ongoing education rooted in Central Texas conditions.
Professional Practice
In addition to running BOLT Landscape Design, I am a part-time Landscape Designer with Fertile Ground Gardens LLC, an organic landscape design, installation, and maintenance company based in Austin, Texas. This role keeps me closely connected to installation realities, plant sourcing, and long-term landscape care in real residential settings.
My independent practice allows me to focus on consulting, design, education, and flexible project support, while collaborating with trusted installers and maintenance professionals when needed.
Community & Education
Education is a core part of my work.
I volunteer on the grounds committee at a nearby AISD school, including helping secure grants for outdoor education spaces and nature-based learning environments. I’ve also given talks on WaterWise Landscapes for Shoal Creek Conservancy.
I also share practical gardening guidance (and a bit of humor) online at Tiktok.com/@texasgardening, and bring that same approachable, realistic mindset to my client work.
