Meadow Sedge / Webberville Sedge (Carex perdentata)
A durable Texas native groundcover that creates a soft, natural look without the mowing and watering demands of turf. It works especially well under trees and in mixed native beds where traditional lawn struggles. Over time it forms a low, relaxed carpet rather than a perfectly uniform lawn.
Typical Uses
• Low-traffic lawn alternative
• Under live oaks and shade trees
• Edging paths and patios
• Naturalistic native plantings
Growing Conditions
Light: Sun to part sun (handles bright shade well)
Water: Low once established; occasional deep watering during drought
Soil: Highly adaptable. Handles clay, rocky soils, and average garden beds
Size
Height: Low
Spread: Slowly spreading colony
Behavior
Evergreen or Deciduous: Semi-evergreen in mild winters
Growth rate: Moderate
Traffic tolerance: Light
Deer resistance: Moderate. Usually ignored once established but may be sampled when tender
Ecology
Native range: Texas and Oklahoma
Wildlife value: Provides cover for beneficial insects and supports small pollinators in mixed plantings
Extra Notes
Does not need mowing. Can be trimmed once in late winter if desired to refresh appearance. Looks best when allowed to grow naturally rather than maintained like turf. Recommended spacing 12–18 inches apart. Closer spacing fills in faster.
